Milei Management Reverses Direction on Crypto Tax Benefits Law

Earlier this year, Argentine President Javier Milei made a controversial move by separating the proposed crypto tax law from a broader reform package, accelerating the implementation of existing reforms.

Additionally, the bill, known as the ‘Ley Ómnibus’ or ‘Law of Foundations and Starting Points for the Freedom of Argentines,’ initially included provisions requiring taxpayers to report undeclared assets, including cryptocurrencies. However, Interior Minister Guillermo Francos announced the removal of these provisions to fast-track economic development and streamline legal processes.

Argentina is facing severe economic challenges. These challenges include one of the world’s highest inflation rates, at 200 percent annually. Despite this, Argentina has seen significant growth in its cryptocurrency market. GWI research shows that Argentina has a high rate of digital asset ownership. Globally, Argentina ranks second in this category. The ownership rate in Argentina is 23.5 percent. The only country with a higher rate is Turkey.
